    JPL's electric and hybrid vehicles project: Project activities and preliminary test results

    Efforts to achieve a 100 mile urban range, to reduce petroleum usage 40% to 70%, and to commercialize battery technology are discussed with emphasis on an all plastic body, four passenger car that is flywheel assisted and battery powered, and on an all metal body, four passenger car with front wheel drive and front motor. For the near term case, a parallel hybrid in which the electric motor and the internal combustion engine may directly power the drive wheels, is preferred to a series design. A five passenger car in which the electric motor and the gasoline engine both feed into the same transmission is discussed. Upgraded demonstration vehicles were tested using advanced lead acid, nickel zinc, nickel iron, and zinc chloride batteries to determine maximum acceleration, constant speed, and battery behavior. The near term batteries demonstrated significant improvement relative to current lead acid batteries. The increase in range was due to improved energy density, and ampere hour capacity, with relatively 1 small weight and volume differences

    The forgotten emotion: an interpretative phenomenological analysis into the lived experience of anger in young men

    This dissertation explores the lived experience of problematic anger in young men. Qualitative phenomenological research was conducted using semi-structured interviews with a sample of six male participants between the ages of 20-25 years. The accounts were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) and three main themes were identified. Theme one explores how anger initially stirs within the participants, impacting their sense of agency and their bodily feelings and sensations. Theme two illuminates how anger impacts the participant’s changing self-concept, a loss of awareness and control, and the issue of responsibility for actions taken. Theme three highlights how the participants attempt to regain control of themselves and return to a state of calm and composure. The study seeks to contribute to the paucity of research into the lived-experience of anger in young men. Findings suggest that anger is an intensely dynamic experience that unfolds with an increasing impact on young men’s ability to retain control over their sense of self as experienced in time, space, in their bodies and inter-relationally. The study recommends that continued research be undertaken into anger through the lens of these four areas, often referred to as the ‘existentials’

    Methodological reflections on the evaluation of the implementation and adoption of national electronic health record systems

There is as yet little empirical evidence to justify such decisions, hence the need for rigorous independent evaluation of current implementation efforts. Such evaluations however pose a number of important challenges. This presentation has been designed as a part of a Panel based on our experience of evaluating the National Health Service’s (NHS) implementation of electronic health records (EHR) systems in hospitals throughout England. We discuss the methodological challenges encountered in planning and undertaking an evaluation of a program of this scale and reflect on why and how we adapted our evaluation approach—both conceptually and methodologically—in response to these challenges. Study design/population studied: Critical reflections on a multi-disciplinary and multi-facet independent evaluation of a national program to implement electronic health record systems into 12 ‘early wave’ NHS hospitals in England. Findings: Our initial plan was to employ a mixed methods longitudinal ‘before-during-after’ study design. We however found this unsustainable in the light of fluxes in policy, contractual issues and over-optimistic schedules for EHR deployments. More importantly, this research design failed adequately to address the core of multi-faceted evolving EHRs as understood by key stakeholders and as worked out in their distinct work settings. Thus conventional outcomes-centric evaluations may not easily scale-up when evaluating transformational programs and may indeed prove misleading. New assumptions concerning the implementation process of EHR need to be developed that recognize the constantly changing milieu of policy, product, projects and professions that are inherent to such national implementations. The approaches we subsequently developed substitute the positivist view that EHR initiatives are self-evident and self-contained interventions, which are amenable to traditional quantitative evaluations, to one that focuses on how they are understood by various stakeholders and made to work in specific contexts. These assumptions recast the role of evaluation towards an approach that explores and interprets processes of socio-technical change that surround EHR implementation and adoption as seen by multiple stakeholders. Conclusions and policy implications: There is likely to be an increase in politically-driven national programs of reform of healthcare based on information and communication technologies. Programs on such a scale are inherently complex with extended temporalities and extensive and dynamic sets of stakeholders. They are, in short, different and pose new evaluation challenges that previously formulated evaluation methods for health information systems cannot easily address. This calls for methodological innovation amongst research teams and their supporting bodies. We argue that evaluation of such system-wide transformation programs are likely to demand both breadth and depth of experience within a multidisciplinary research team, constant questioning of what is and what can be evaluated and how, and a particular way of working that emphasizes continuous dialogue and reflexivity. Making this transition is essential to enable evaluations that can usefully inform policy-making. Health policy experts urgently need to reassess the evaluation strategies they employ as they come to address national policies for system-wide transformation based on new electronic health infrastructures

The average density of quasiholes is fixed by electrostatics and decreases slowly with increasing distance from the edge.     A joint analytical and experimental investigation of three-dimensional flowfield development within the lobe region of turbofan forced mixer nozzles is described. The objective was to develop a method for predicting the lobe exit flowfield. In the analytical approach, a linearized inviscid aerodynamical theory was used for representing the axial and secondary flows within the three-dimensional convoluted mixer lobes and three-dimensional boundary layer analysis was applied thereafter to account for viscous effects. The experimental phase of the program employed three planar mixer lobe models having different waveform shapes and lobe heights for which detailed measurements were made of the three-dimensional velocity field and total pressure field at the lobe exit plane. Velocity data was obtained using Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) and total pressure probing and hot wire anemometry were employed to define exit plane total pressure and boundary layer development. Comparison of data and analysis was performed to assess analytical model prediction accuracy. As a result of this study a planar mixed geometry analysis was developed.     Military engines frequently need large quantities of thrust for short periods of time. The addition of an augmentor can provide such thrust increases but with a penalty of increased duct length and engine weight. The addition of a forced mixer to the augmentor improves performance and reduces the penalty, as well as providing a method for siting the required flame holders. In this report two augmentor concepts are investigated: a swirl-mixer augmentor and a mixer-flameholder augmentor. Several designs for each concept are included and an experimental assessment of one of the swirl-mixer augmentors is presented

    In the pure U(1) lattice gauge theory with the Villain action we find that the monopole mass in the Coulomb phase and the monopole condensate in the confinement phase scale according to simple power laws. This holds outside the coupling region in which on finite toroidal lattices the metastability phenomena occur.     Is obesity a disease?

    Shakespeare said that a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. Analogously, obesity as a clinical entity based on its current definition of a BMI>30Kg/m2 remains essentially the same thing, whatever we name it. Unfortunately however, BMI which is calculated from just two basic anthropometric measurements, is seriously limited as a sole diagnostic criterion for obesity. It is accepted that on a population-based epidemiological level, BMI appears to perform well as a measure of adiposity [1]. Although BMI usually also correlates well with adiposity on an individual level, ‘excessive adiposity’ as a concept seems quite subjective. Furthermore, BMI also correlates with muscularity, and therefore stumbles as a definition of obesity in some people with excessive muscularity. Finally, ‘excessive adiposity’ may occur at a BMI <30Kg/m2 in some people with sarcopenia for example. BMI as an indicator of ‘excessive adiposity’ is therefore inherently flawed, particularly in those people with abnormal body habitus. A further limitation of BMI is that it provides no indication of body fat distribution. It is well-established that fat distribution (such as visceral versus subcutaneous gluteal fat) influences risk of metabolic dysfunction and co-morbidity development [2]. Although waist circumference is a useful measure of visceral fat, this measurement does not feature as a diagnostic criterion for obesity based on its current definition
